Old Market Gap

Cycleway

Way-finding

Crossings

New segregated cycleway keeps cyclists apart from people walking and wheeling from Castle Park to Old Market Roundabout. Tower Hill also has a segregated cycleway which allows easy access to the Temple Way underpass and  This makes then junction a lot safer and more accessible.

Way-finding

Crossings

New signalised crossings make passing through safer and, with added segregation, less congested. Crossing approaches have had surface treatment applied to signalise the change in speed limit and slow traffic down. The Lower Castle Street cycle lay-by also allows cyclists to wait before crossing traffic lanes.

Way-finding

Way-finding

New signs have been added on the Old Market Gap and in and around Old Market to make the junction easier to use and navigate. Vehicular signage ensures a clear understanding of the new traffic directions, new routes to destinations, and priorities.

overview of the scheme

Possibly confusing diagram explained...

  • Road space has been reallocated to give more space to active travellers through the slimming of roads, new segregated active travel infrastructure and traffic-calming features.
  • Conflicts between all users will be reduced as fully segregated footways and active travel infrastructure replaced the share-with-care space at the end of Castle Street.
  • Increased planting and trees have improved the character and biodiversity of the junction as well as slowing traffic and signalling the change of speed limit and atmosphere.
